Its chemical formula is C10H17OH, it is colorless liquid with lilac scent. It is soluble in alcohol but insoluble in water. Its melting point is 36.9°C, and its boiling point 219°C. Terpineol is used as an ingredient in perfumes and as a foaming agent in the flotation of ores of nonferrous metals.α terpineol is an aromatic compound that is used for providing a sweet and pleasant aroma to a variety of cosmetic, personal care and pharmaceutical preparations. It is one of the components responsible for the antifungal activity in Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) essential oil.
Alpha Terpineol is a special kind of terpene alcohol that are the mixed of isomeric terpineol. Basically this is obtained by dehydration of terpine hydrate. It is composed predominantly of alpha terpineol,which is the only fragrant substance in the isomers,with lesser amounts of gamma, beta and delta terpineol. At normal temperatures,it is a water white,oily liquid or crystalline with a pleasant floral odor.Its excellent solvency and surface active properties accounts for its usefulness to many fields and industry.
